CD Projekt confirmed that there will be backward compatibility on next-gen consoles earlier today. They also mentioned that there would be a free upgrade to a next-gen version but it’s not going to be this year.
According to CD Projekt via IGN, the free next-gen upgrade that will come to console owners that already own the game won’t happen until 2021. This means that gamers who pick the game up at launch and then upgrade to a next-gen console are going to have to play on the current generation of consoles for some time.
Even then, the date of 2021 is only a rough date and it could take even longer. CD Projekt Red’s CEO Adam Kicinski added:
It’s not surprising, but as everyone eagerly awaits the release in November, it would be impossible to hold off for the update to experience the game its full glory. I guess it will be a case of playing the backwards compatibility version on the new consoles until the update lands.
